Contemporary Chimney Surround

The homeowners on this project wanted to bring the warm tones of the outdoors and the exterior horizontal wood siding of this modern house on a mountain into their living space.  Where there had been a concrete wall meant for a gas fireplace separating the living and dining rooms the team at Simpson Cabinetry designed and built a unique horizontal surround for this centerpiece of the home.  Sapele, a species in the mahogany family of woods, was chosen for its warmth and richness.  Floating shelves to the side of the center wall-wrap were made to match the wall and carry the warm wood tones to the exterior wall while also providing space for the family's books and artwork.  Vertical sapele slab doors were used in the cabinet below the wall as a contract with the horizontal surround.  The end result?  A stunning centerpiece of the modern home.
